AutoCAD’s construction and functionality are based on the front end of the software being what it calls the «intelligent drawing engine» and the back end being the «database engine». AutoCAD’s intelligent drawing engine is what makes AutoCAD unique. Users can place objects on any layer, change their properties, move them, resize them, change their color, and so on.

The layers are used to «organize» the drawings. Essentially, this allows you to subdivide a drawing into multiple sections and display each section at a separate layer. For example, you could use layers to separate the front and back of a building. You could then place walls at one layer, roofs at another layer, a roof trusses at yet another layer, and so on. The drawings on each layer can then be viewed, modified, and printed separately. This makes layers an indispensable tool when creating a CAD drawing or when dealing with a complex design.

To create new layers, right-click on the «Layers» option. Then select «New Layer» as seen in Figure 2 below.

However, AutoCAD is also available as a graphical programming tool for use without programming. In this mode, the user inputs a sequence of commands in a graphical programming language and AutoCAD executes these commands. The sequence of commands is stored in a form called a toolpath.

Data Format

AutoCAD can import and export most of the common CAD file formats, such as DWG, DXF, DGN, IGES, and Inventor. The other applications mentioned above also support common CAD formats.

Autodesk has introduced the.dwg file format and.dxf file format, which are AutoCAD-compatible graphics formats.

The primary AutoCAD file format is a binary format. This allows users to share a file with other users, edit the file, and collaborate on a drawing.
